On Remembrance Day

My father is just a kid
Armed with gun, bayonet
Sent to France, fight for country
He shows valor heroism
Never shirks duty
Always showing fearlessness
Gripped by frost bite
Almost perishes
Lucky to survive
And be my father

Poppy Fields

A soldier in France
Lowers in a haunch
Damn bullets whizzing
Zapping and whirring
Perspiration drops
Down very young face
He fires last bullet
And then hears with it
Sound of man falling
His first ever kill
The forest stands still
